What is D&D?--A Brief Introduction

In 1974, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson published the first game of Dungeons and Dragons with a series of books that helped change gaming from massive battles to role playing of individual characters.  The first role-playing game has now evolved into its 5th Edition over 40 years in fantastic fantasy stories.

The game is rooted in the narrative.  Players and a game official (dungeonmaster) create the story cooperatively and bring heroes through quests, battles, and adventures, creating an epic story that can turn into a saga.  Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, the company now publishing the game, the hobby has exploded into novels, board games, and video games, but the RPG has stayed at the heart of the experience and forms the core of the experience.
